SCALING AND POLISHING

Scaling and polishing are two of the most common dental procedures intended for the prevention of dental disease, specifically tooth decay (dental caries) and gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis). It is recommended to have your teeth examined and cleaned by your dentist at least once a year. One easy way to remember is to time this on your birthday month. Your teeth deserve some TLC too.

Scaling is a procedure that involves removing tartar or stains on the teeth using a vibrating instrument using a water spray called an ultrasonic scaler; while polishing is the process of, well, polishing the teeth. These days polishing involves spraying very fine-grained powder onto the tooth surface. This powder efficiently removes the remaining debris, whilst leaving soft and hard tissues unharmed. Furthermore, with its sweet taste and gentle spray, it is perfect for children, orthodontic patients and patients undergoing supportive periodontal therapy. All this combined ensures that polishing is a truly comfortable and an enjoyable experience for you.

Who should consider this?

  • Everyone including (brave) pre-schoolers, at least once a year
  • Before an important occasion (e.g. wedding, job interview etc.)
  • Before or during pregnancy (gum bleeding is common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes)
  • If you experience frequent gum bleeding
  • If you suffer from bad breath
